Avatars United: Why in the 'Verse Did I Join?

For some insane reason, I joined Twitter. And then I found a lot of fun people to follow, more informative sources, and a few chatterboxes. During the course of reading tweets yesterday, I learned that Linden Labs (LL) bought up Avatars United. I hadn't heard of it before that time. The tweets about joining were increasing, so I caved to the pseudo-twitter-pressure. (No, that isn't a word, but it should be!) I now have an account with Avatars United.

The site looks like a light version of Facebook aimed at our digital selves, rather than the bodies we occupy in meatspace. If you've been drop-kicked out of Facebook with your digital self, this would be the place to go.

I confess that I don't fully understand why I decided to get an account there. So far, it's not exactly intuitive on all aspects. It took some digging and almost-asking to find out how to get coins that could be used to liven up your profile's theme. You can either spend real coinage on coins, or you can complete offers. And the offers presented either cost you real coinage or are free and open you to that beloved spam. I no longer have any desire to trick out my profile. I'm just too cheap to spend money on such things. Even free spam is too high a price to pay for a cool background.

In the meantime, I'll keep watch on the site and remain active. It may turn out to be good for networking. If you feel the need, you can go to my profile.

Peter, I've noticed plurk is popular, thanks to simultaneous posts to plurk & twitter. I've managed to avoid plurk thus far. Yay!
